Growing and glowing. This is my mission; increasing growth and a glow that resonates from the inside out. So far, so good. I’m realising my own strength and resilience in moments that may stare me dead in the face and dare me to give up hope. Rather than losing hope, I fight back.
It hasn’t always been like this. There were times that I struggled with my own fears, insecurities and a sense of anxiety, almost crippling me every day. This stemmed from several factors and not so pleasant experiences. No matter what I tried I could not get it under control, from stress eating, excessive retail therapy and sometimes totally isolating myself from everything and everyone. There were times that I could not see any light at the end of the tunnel and that completely stressed me out even more.
Then there came the point where I realised that I had to stop hiding and live! It turned out that I had everything that I needed within me in order to grow and glow from inside out. I picked myself up, started searching for my truth, became honest with myself and others about my insecurities and decided that if this is my life then I was going to live it fully; FLAWS and ALL. I decided to stop hiding, stop shrinking for others and that I would grow and bloom where I was planted.
I believe that in order for anyone to grow they must be totally honest with themselves and with the people around them. The more we try to hide our flaws the less likely it is for us to truly evolve into the individuals that we are destined to be. Sometimes our lack of growth and inability to grow comes from our tendency to not forgive ourselves for the terrible and not so terrible mistakes we’ve made in our past or even in our present. Mistakes of love, relationships, friendships, career choices, health choices, fitness, and the list could go on and on. However, it is important that we learn how to forgive ourselves even when we mess up really badly. We have to learn how to forgive our mistakes, clean up our wounds and move on to evolve into our most vibrant beautiful self.
Sometimes it takes a really bad thing to jolt us into becoming who we really ought to be; and at that point others may giggle and say that this is your sure end but you should determine within yourself to have the last laugh. To be honest, a lot of the time we let shame and the perception that we may feel others have of our lives keep us from wriggling our way out of the mess that we are in. Don’t do it! We are all on a journey, some of us may have an easier path than others but that doesn’t mean that these two paths don’t have the very same potential and ability to lead us to a very successful and amazing destiny. Remember you can be a seed and grow when situations in life bury you! Just remind yourself that you are a seed and you have growing capacity. Drink your water, lather your body with coconut oil (lol 🙂 ) and put your face toward the sky, let the sun kiss you.
This doesn’t mean that it will be smooth sailing from then on. Yes, people will often try to remind you of where you have been or your mistakes but pay them no mind. Stay focused on your goal toward being a better you. They are only trying to project their own insecurities and shortcomings upon you and sometimes are afraid that if you are able to do it, then it means they can also. However, that would mean they would have to get out of their comfort zone and they would rather not do that, because that is all they know. They are afraid that if you move on then others will no longer focus on your flaws and in turn the spotlight will now be solely focused on them. Sometimes when people try to bring you down or keep you down, it is literally because they need the company down there. Don’t let them stop your evolution.
In order for us to grow we may need to leave some people behind. Those around you who are constantly negative and do not encourage your growth. Those who are always doubting that it can be done or that you have the potential to do it. Sometimes it may come in the form of family, relatives, friends, co-workers, business partners or some acquaintance, but you have to decide to choose your growth first. Still love them, but sometimes it has to be love from a distance.
Don’t compare yourself to others either. Remember that we are all on a different journey and here is where you may need to be at this moment and these are the experiences you need to have in order to develop the true elements within you that will catapult you into your best self. You were created to be your own unique individual and not a duplicate of another being. God created you with a divine plan in mind, so remind yourself of that daily.
In addition, stop blaming yourself. I was reminded of this when I visited a herbal doctor to provide me with some natural solutions to ease my migraines. The day of the visit we spoke endlessly about several things. He then got back to what I actually came for and proposed treatment. While sitting there closing up the consultation he said to me, ‘you need to stop blaming yourself. Just let go of the past, let go of the people who hurt you, it’s not your fault it’s their fault for not loving and appreciating you, so stop blaming yourself. You have a beautiful soul just move forward from today and live your life the best way you can.’ Needless to say, at that point I became really emotional and burst into tears. Tears that I had been holding back for so long, tears that only my soul could understand but at that moment I felt relief, I felt lifted. I felt free.
After this freeing experience I continued my journey toward being a better me. I picked myself up, I changed my diet, focused on my career and my budding business venture, commenced writing and started genuinely living in my truth. This is when I began seeing my light from within, and others could see it to. I remember a very dear friend of mine calling me to say how proud he was of me and how good it was to see me glowing. You see he knew a good bit of my story and so for him to recognise and acknowledge that he saw growth in me was such a beautiful thing. My glow was better than any colourpop highlighter I had ever used (and God knows I love me some colourpop highlighter), it was natural, beautiful and genuine.
Finally, let your hurt fuel your passion. It was through a very hurtful experience that I decided to let my hurt and frustration fuel my passion to thrive. Everything that I felt I put it down on paper and used it to ignite a fire within me that would cause me to walk into my destiny. I remember reading books that encouraged self growth. They helped me truly see that I was more than any mistake I had ever made and that my life would go far beyond the disappointments that I experienced. It was in this dark place that I was able to see my own true light. I was growing and I was glowing and it was the most beautiful thing I had ever seen.
I am still a work in progress. I am not here to feign perfection in any way. All I am is human; flesh, bones, a beating heart and blood running through me. Everyday I learn a little more about myself and the world that I live in. Some days I make mistakes and other days I do a really pretty good job at life. Then there are those days where I just want to lay on the beach, soak up some sun and swim in the ocean for the entire duration of the day and those where I just want to lay in bed under the covers. I don’t know where I will be tomorrow or what the future holds, all I know is that my promise to myself is to be a better version of the person I was yesterday. To learn something new, to spread love and light to everyone I come in contact with in one way or another and to keep growing and glowing from inside out. Won’t you make that promise today too? You won’t regret it.
“So for the people in your life who have not known your worth, who have been reckless with your heart or fallen painfully short of your expectation, sincerely wish them well, forgive yourself for holding on to it and preventing yourself from really living, forgive them for their shortcomings (as well as your own) scoop up that huge beautiful life lesson and all the pieces of your heart, and sail on. You have mountains to move, dreams to dream, and a world to change, even if the only world is your own.”
