How to Kick Start Your Mornings

Looking to get your days off to a good start. Here are a few tips on how to kick start your mornings and create a near perfect day where you meet your daily goals and help create the life that you dream of.

Pray/Meditate

Finding the time to meditate and pray can be one of the most effective methods of centering yourself while helping prepare you for the day ahead. Daily challenges are inevitable, however how we react to these challenges can make a significant difference. As highlighted by an article written by Susan Gammage , meditation and prayer helps to reduce stress, improve health, give better control of your thoughts, increases happiness and improves your concentration. It is advised that we practice consistent prayer and meditation in order to experience maximum positive benefits of these practices.

Journaling

Generally the suggestion of journaling awaken memories of our ‘dear diary’ teenage years where we would secretly jot down our newest crush from high school and quickly stash our diary back into our secret place. However, this journaling that I am suggesting is one that is more goal oriented and focused. Journaling first thing in the morning about our goals for the day or reflecting or our weekly or monthly goals will condition our mind toward engaging in activities which are in alignment with achieving these daily goal oriented tasks. What you write you are more likely to achieve. Journaling about your goals helps you clarify what you want and encourages you to consider the why and how, not just the what. Reflecting on goals in writing continually reminds you to take the next action necessary to achieve them. They serve as a tool for identifying what you should prioritize on a daily basis, and what you should let go of.

Exercise

In addition to healthy heart, weight loss and overall well being, morning exercise has added benefits of providing you with more energy and boosting your mood. According to an article by Robyn Whalen morning workouts are one of the best ways to feel energized and prepared for your day. In fact, a morning workout might even give you more energy than a cup of coffee! In addition breaking an early morning sweat will reward you with a rush of endorphins, serotonin, and dopamine – feel-good chemicals that will boost your mood and help zap stress. 

Turn On Music That Moves You

Nothing boost your spirit like that of some good old music. I often turn on my music from my iphone and connect it to my bluetooth speakers. “Dancing makes you feel good because it makes you feel so alive”. I will sing and dance to the beat while I prepare for the day ahead. I am a soca lover so music from Machel is some of my first choice of soca hits to get me morning ready and energized. Dancing also improves spatial awareness, as well as raising the heart rate and causing a release of feel-good endorphins into the bloodstream. One more benefit is that it helps reduce levels of cortisol – a stress hormone. “That’s another reason why it makes you feel happy and more relaxed,” says fitness expert Matt Roots. So whether your music of choice is soca, dance, calypso or jazz turn some feel good music on and get moving!

Get Dressed Up!

Whether you’re working from your home office or you travel to your corporate office it is best to dress the part. Working from home doesn’t indicate you should not get dressed up and feel like the super power that you are. Getting well dressed is an indication of how you view yourself and how you value your career. “It is only shallow people who do not judge by appearances”, said Oscar Wilde.  Succinctly he highlighted that how you present yourself says more about you than your title or your job description. This does not mean that you have to wear expensive clothes or your Sunday best, it encourages us that whatever we get dressed in ought to boost our self confidence, make us feel empowered and put us in the frame of mind that you can get the job done. We evaluate people each day on their appearance and they in turn evaluate us. Clothing can enhance our psychological states, and it can improve our performance on tasks. Therefore not only does clothing reflect personality but it encourages and even develops personality too. Therefore, we dress the part we are or the part we desire to reflect. So every morning get dressed up, throw some lipstick on or groom your beard well and go out there and handle your business!
